Narrow red sand spit at Orhaniye where you can walk hundreds of meters into the bay
Kızkumu, in Orhaniye bay 35 kilometers from Marmaris, is a narrow spit of red sand that runs several hundred meters out into the water, shallow enough to walk along its whole length; from shore, people strolling the sandbar appear to be walking on the sea. The name means 'girl's sand,' after a local legend about a young woman who crossed the water this way to reach the man she loved. The sand gets its color from a high iron oxide content, which stands out sharply against the blue of the bay. Water sits on both sides of the spit, calm and shallow on one, slightly deeper and livelier on the other, and swimming is possible on both, though currents vary. The area remains largely undeveloped, with basic facilities, pine forest behind the shore, and local restaurants serving fresh seafood with a view of the sandbar.

Pine-covered peninsulas break this coast into dozens of sheltered bays. Much of the area is under environmental protection, which keeps the water clear and the shoreline largely unbuilt.
Sailors and walkers get the most from this coast. The bays are sheltered, and boat traffic stays light outside July and August.
First-time visitors and solo travelers both manage easily here. The area is walkable, and staff at most sites are used to tourists.
Marmaris is an old port that now runs on yacht tourism. The natural harbor has been inhabited for over 3,000 years because it offers some of the best protection from weather on this coast.
Pine-covered peninsulas shelter the bay and break the coast into smaller coves. Greek settlements, Ottoman fortifications, and modern marinas all sit within a few kilometers of each other.
Boat building and pine honey production are the area's traditional trades. Some workshops let visitors watch. Ask first; most owners are happy to explain the work.

Most Marmaris attractions are easy to reach from the bay. Netsel Marina sits next to the castle quarter, and İçmeler beach is a short dolmuş ride from the town center. Restaurants around the harbor serve fresh seafood.
Bazaars near the harbor sell Turkish crafts and souvenirs. Waterfront cafes are a good place to try Turkish tea between stops.
