Fethiye Tuesday Market: A Morning at the Salı Pazarı

Fresh fruit, village cheeses, spices, towels and a lot of friendly chatter

Every Tuesday, Fethiye’s big weekly market, the Salı Pazarı, fills the streets of the town centre, and there is a second market day on Fridays. It is one of the best ways to see local life: farmers from the surrounding villages bring their fruit, vegetables, cheese, olives and honey, and long rows of stalls sell clothes, towels, bags, spices and souvenirs. Locals come to do their weekly shopping, visitors come for the colour, the smells and the bargains, and everyone ends up chatting.

How to enjoy it

  1. Go in the morning. The produce is freshest and the lanes are cooler and calmer before midday.
  2. Give yourself time. The market is large: two or three hours is about right if you want to see both the food and the textile sections.
  3. Start with a snack. Try a freshly made gözleme (thin folded flatbread with cheese, spinach or potato) and a glass of freshly squeezed orange or pomegranate juice.
  4. Taste before you buy. Stallholders are happy to let you try olives, cheese, dried fruit and nuts.
  5. Bring cash and a bag. Small notes make shopping easier, and a sturdy shopping bag or backpack is handy.

What to look for

  • Village produce: seasonal fruit, tomatoes, peppers, herbs, local honey, white cheese and olives.
  • Spices and dried goods: sumac, chilli flakes, dried mint, teas, nuts and Turkish delight. Great, light gifts to take home.
  • Peştemal (Turkish towels): light cotton towels that are perfect for the beach and pack small.
  • Clothes, bags and shoes: summer clothing at friendly prices.
🌿 Shopping tips

Friendly bargaining is normal for clothes, bags and souvenirs, but fruit, vegetables and food are sold at fixed prices. For branded clothes or shoes, have a good look at the item before paying and check whether it is genuine, and make sure the piece you take home is the one you chose. A smile and a “teşekkürler” (thank you) go a long way!

Getting there

The market is in Fethiye town centre, an easy walk from the harbour. Dolmuş minibuses from Çalış, Ölüdeniz and Hisarönü all stop nearby; just ask the driver for the Salı Pazarı. Arriving by car on a Tuesday is harder, as parking around the centre fills up early.

Make a day of it

After the market, walk down to Fethiye harbour for a coffee by the boats, visit the rock tombs above the town, and in the evening choose your fish at the fish market and have it cooked at one of the restaurants around it. End the day with the sunset at Çalış Beach.
